LOS MANDATOS AFIRMATIVOS: AFFIRMATIVE COMMANDS

Commands are used to direct specific people to your authority, otherwise, telling someone what to do. In this section, we'll be exploring informal commands using the pronoun tú. You would use these types of commands with people you are familiar with or people around the same age as you.
For example:
  • "Buy the bread."
  • "Clean your room"
  • "Do the work"

To form most commands in Spanish, only a simple process is needed:
  1. Take the infinite form of your verb
  2. Conjugate into the tú form
  3. Drop the 's'

Simple, right? Here's some examples of commands in use:
  • Come tus vegetales antes del postre.
  • Eat your vegetables before dessert.
  • Escribe tu carta.
  • Write your letter.
  • Cuenta tus beneficios.
  • Count your blessings.

However, not everything in life is as simple as it seems, and that applies to Spanish as well. There are several verbs when forming commands, use an irregular stem. They are:

  • Go to the supermarket to buy oranges.

  • Haz tu tarea de matematicas.

Lastly, there are a few rules to follow when you want to attach a pronoun to your command. When attaching your pronoun, add it to the end of your affirmative command. Also, an accent is required over the stressed value if the original command is only one syllable, or if you are attaching more than one pronoun to your command.
Examples:
  • ¡Levántate!
  • (You) stand up!
  • ¡Vete!
  • (You) Go away!
  • ¡Dámela!
  • Give me that!
